British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is offering a unique opportunity as experienced management pilots in the role of Chief Pilot and Deputy Chief Pilot.

What is the role about?

The successful applicants will be responsible for delivery of all flying operations and the leadership of flight crew. They will manage all aviation support to BAS’s core Antarctic Operation in addition to supervision of our other global airborne science activities. The pilot management team must achieve and maintain the highest levels of safety, regulatory compliance and operational efficiency.

BAS seeks high calibre pilot applicants to fill the roles of Chief Pilot (CP), Deputy Chief Pilot (DCP).

These posts must be filled with the best candidates available, however funding only exists to recruit one additional pilot. Therefore, applications are invited from suitably experienced internal and external candidates possessing a range of relevant skills.
The Air Unit has the demanding task of enabling the BAS Scientific and Operational objectives whilst meeting, or exceeding, the relevant Airworthiness Authority regulations in one of the harshest flying environments on the planet.

The successful applicants will support the Head of Air Unit by performing key management duties to ensure the continued safe and efficient operation of the BAS Air Unit.

They will be actively engaged in the flying task whilst also forming the Pilot Management Team. Together, this team is responsible for: all aspects of pilot management; aircraft and simulator training; maintenance and development of the Air Operations Manual; annual planning and daily flying supervision.ants to fill the roles of Chief Pilot.


EASA Part FCL ATPL (A) or Frozen ATPL (A) MCC Course (Multi-crew Co-operation) Or equivalent FAA license and qualifications plus ability to work for UK government agency.

  • EASA Part FCL ATPL (A) or Frozen ATPL (A) MCC Course (Multi-crew Co-operation) OR Equivalent FAA license and qualifications plus ability to work for UK government agency. – Essential

Resource Management ability

Skills / Experience

  • 2500 hours minimum – Essential
  • 1500 hours Command – Essential


The Management Pilot will be responsible for ensuring all flight operations are safe, efficient and meet the defined operational objectives. All posts require substantial Antarctic deployed periods (4-6 months annually).

Chief Pilot/Deputy Chief Pilot:

  • Maintenance of regulatory compliance;
  • Maintenance and development of Air Operations Manual;
  • Annual scheduling of assets and tasks;
  • Management of crew roster and leave;
  • Daily scheduling of flights and crew;
  • Co-ordinating Air Unit tasking with Rothera Station activities;
  • Enabling the Antarctic Field and Global Science Programmes;
  • Pilot appraisals;
  • Maintenance of pilot discipline and morale; and
  • Completing or solving every other unexpected task or problem that comes along… you can’t predict these, and they never stop.
