British Antarctic Survey seeks to recruit a suitable First Officer pilot for an exciting new opportunity with extraordinary career and personal development opportunities.
What is the role about?
The successful candidate will be trained to fly the Dash 7 aircraft in the complex Antarctic airbridge mission and deep field logistics support roles. The right candidate can, after a suitable period, anticipate adding the DHC-6 type rating, with a view to future Twin Otter Command. The role also includes diverse opportunity to support aspects of the ground operation including hangar and runway management and maintenance. The candidate is expected to rapidly become fully involved with all aspects of flying, deep-field and ground activities, quickly becoming a key member of the Air Unit team and providing continuity to that team for at least four years. In addition to advancement to DHC-6 Captain, the role will naturally develop into type qualification on BAS’s Dash 7 replacement aircraft forming the core airbridge and airborne heavy logistics capability for the next 25 years. This post is unusual and varied and BAS will invest heavily in the training and development of the right candidate.

To contribute to the safe and efficient operation of BAS aircraft as laid out in the Air Operations Manual and relevant Airworthiness Authority Regulations. Acting as FO on the Dash 7 aircraft implementing the BAS Flying Programme as directed by Air Unit Management, and supporting the safe, efficient conduct of fight and ground tasks to ensure that the wider goals of the Survey and its collaborators are met.
Primary duties include flying and non-flying tasks (approx. 50:50). A BAS FO Pilot must be able to adapt to their surroundings and display excellent teamworking qualities at all times, and strong leadership when appropriate. All BAS Line Pilots are expected to take a pro-active approach to all tasks and display initiative and good situational awareness, particularly when operating in remote environments.
Responsibilities also include deputising for the Air Unit Ground Support role to assist/complete all required ground tasks in support of the Air Operation at Rothera. This involves pre and post flight preparation of aircraft, daily management of the Hangar and Apron activity, and physical upkeep of the runway.
EASA Part FCL ATPL (A) or Frozen ATPL (A) MCC Course
(Multi-crew Co-operation) Or Equivalent FAA license and qualifications with ability to work in UK Government organisation
The FO LP will support the Captain to: ensure Dash 7 flight operations are safe and efficient; plan flights; ensure objectives and tasks detailed by the Chief Pilot/Deputy Chief Pilot are achieved.
- Safe and efficient operation of the aircraft at all times.
- For flight operations the FO LP will follow all safety and operational procedures in accordance with the BAS Air Operations Manual and all current/relevant airworthiness authority regulations.
- The FO LP will report progress, deficiencies and faults related to aircraft and flight operations to the Captain/Chief Pilot/Deputy Chief Pilot as appropriate.
- Keep current all necessary licences and approvals to fly for BAS aircraft within Antarctica and elsewhere on all assigned operational and training missions.
- Show due regard for co-workers and an appreciation of the close surrounding in which most of the working and off–duty time is spent when detached to remote locations.
- Undertake other appropriate duties required by Station or Line Management.
Primary Ground duties:
- Assist (and when required deputise for) the Hangar Manager in the completion of all required ground tasks to support the Air Operation including, but not limited to, the movement, loading, fuelling of aircraft pre and post flight.
- Organisation and upkeep of Hangar and ground equipment
- Maintenance of the runway and apron area.
- Document procedures and processes associated with the Ground Support role.
- Any other tasks identified by the Director and Chief Pilot.
- Time apportioned to these duties should reflect their priority. The following is a strongly recommended guide:

- Ground Duties 45%
- General/Administrative Duties 10%
It is expected that the time apportionment will vary from year to year to accommodate changing internal and external demands. However some of the apportionment should be predictable and will be communicated during the annual pilot performance appraisal.
