United shares soar to new record despite PR woes

United Airlines’ shares have reached a record high – just weeks after the US carrier had to apologise for dragging a passenger off one of its flights. Oscar Munoz, United’s CEO, apologised last month in the aftermath of passenger Dr David Dao being forcibly removed by security staff from an overbooked domestic flight with videos of the incident published around the world. Despite this PR disaster, United’s parent company United Continental Holdings saw its shares rise to a new high of $78.55 in trading on the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday.

Air Berlin posts further losses

Cash-strapped carrier Air Berlin suffered a net loss of 781,9 million last year, up from 446,6 million in 2015, the airline has announced

Revenues at the group dropped to 3,79 billion, down around 7.1 percent on 2015’s figure, after Air Berlin had reduced its fleet by almost half to 75 aircraft and slashed hundreds of routes, now serving fewer than 100 destinations.

“Today’s financial result is extremely unsatisfying,” chief executive Thomas Winkelmann said during a telephone conference with journalists. “The old Air Berlin was an airline that wanted to do everything; the numbers show very clearly that that doesn’t work,” the former Lufthansa executive went on. Winkelmann hopes to reorient the firm and bring it back to profitability, and said he was “open to new partnerships and cooperation projects,” including new investors, in the context of a reshuffle in the air travel sector.

Alitalia facing bankruptcy once again

Italy’s flag carrier Alitalia has started bankruptcy proceedings for the second time in ten years. Its employees have said ‘no’ to further cuts that would have followed the $2.2 billion recapitalisation plan proposed to save the struggling carrier.
The airline’s shareholders have voted in favour of special administration. Etihad which owns a 49% stake in Alitalia have refused to invest further cash.
According to Italian legislation the government must provide stop-gap funds to keep the airline running. A company statement said “Alitalia’s shareholders meeting, convened today, noted with deep regret the outcome of the referendum among the employees. The negative vote has determined the inability to implement the relaunch and restructuring of the company”.
The airline has said their flight schedule will remain unchanged.
The government has not said whether it would be willing to re-nationalise the carrier, although the figure of the bridging loan during bankruptcy is €400 million. Bankruptcy would lead to the loss of 12,500 jobs.
An opinion poll published on 29th April suggests that 77% of Italians believe the government should not rescue the airline. During the last decade, the carrier’s struggles have cost Italian taxpayers more than €7 billion.
We will bring you more news when we have it although it is anticipated the airline will be put up for sale.

Mega Maldives Airlines suspends operations

Mega Maldives Airlines has suspended operations from May 2nd whilst it completes a restructuring and recapitalisation process. This is another example of the industry being as ‘cut-throat’ as ever.
The Airlines other management and administrative functions will continue to operate.
Their CEO George Weinmann said “the board of directors and executive team felt that it was necessary to focus on the restructuring and improving our product and service. We will look forward to returning to flying very soon with a renewed fleet that can service established, under-served and emerging markets.
Since 2016, Mega Maldives Airlines has been in the process of restructuring the company. This process would involve securing new investments, bringing changes to the ownership structure of the company and a review Mega’s fleet strategy with a view to acquire newer, more suitable aircraft.
